Lidl France Puts Regenerative Potatoes into 1,630 Stores with Two-Year Grower Contracts

Lidl France’s Terre de Progrès potatoes from regenerative farms are now in 1,630 stores at €2.99 per 2 kg bag.

Lidl France has launched a ‘Terre de Progrès — Spéciales Frites’ potato line grown under regenerative agriculture practices, backed by two-year supply commitments and guaranteed volumes for ten French farms.

Lidl is deepening its commitment to regenerative agriculture in the potato aisle. The retailer’s French arm has built a three-way partnership with three suppliers and ten French growers, rolled out under its ‘Terre de Progrès’ range, FreshPlaza reported on 12 October. The plan rests on a two-year supply commitment with guaranteed purchase volumes, plus a set of criteria designed to measure progress in farming practices. The stated goals: support farms in transition, strengthen their resilience to climate risks and secure Lidl’s supply chain.

The ‘Terre de Progrès’ range, launched in 2021, was initially built on the Sols Vivants (Living Soils) programme run by the NGO Earthworm Foundation and its Agriboussol tool. Lidl is now developing the scheme around an assessment framework structured on five pillars: soil health, climate, water management, biodiversity and the socio-economic aspects of farms.

The selected indicators go well beyond a marketing label. They cover soil cover, tillage intensity, fertility and organic matter content; the efficiency of nitrogen fertilisation; carbon footprint and carbon storage in soils; irrigation volumes; and the use of plant protection products measured through the treatment frequency index (TFI). Crop diversification, agroecological infrastructure, farmer training and control of production costs are also monitored. Compatible with recognised market standards, the framework deliberately does not impose a single assessment method: each supplier may choose its own trusted third-party organisation, provided it complies with a common Minimum Reporting Standard.

The ten participating farms are split across three French suppliers: Parmentine (three producers), Vitalis (four) and Pom’Alliance (three). Seven of the ten farms take part in the Earthworm Foundation’s Living Soils programme; the other three are in an initiative assessed by the independent organisation Pour Une Agriculture Du Vivant using its Regeneration Index, and two of them also belong to the COVALO programme.

“Securing our supply chain requires a change in the agronomic model. This tripartite partnership on the ‘Terre de Progrès’ range illustrates our responsible sourcing policy. We are taking concrete action to ensure the resilience of the French agricultural sector and the accessibility of healthy, sustainable food,” Jean-Christophe Monnez, head of sourcing at Lidl France, said in the announcement.

The commercial proof is already on shelves. The new ‘Terre de Progrès — Spéciales Frites’ product, of French origin, has been on sale since 28 September 2026 across Lidl’s 1,630 supermarkets in France, sold in 2 kg bags at €2.99 (about $3.35). The plan covers an annual volume of 1,500 tonnes of potatoes. Through the initiative, the retailer says it intends to strengthen farms’ ability to cope with climate uncertainty, improve management of natural resources and contribute to decarbonising production — notably through carbon sequestration in soils.

For growers, the significance is contractual: guaranteed volumes over two years give farms the visibility needed to finance the material and agronomic investments that practice change demands.
