Diesel at $6-Plus per Gallon Threatens to Lift US Potato Harvest and Hauling Costs

US retail diesel is above $6 a gallon, about 68% higher than a year ago, raising harvest, storage and haulage costs for potato growers.

US retail diesel averaged $6.29 per gallon in September 2026 — about 68% above a year earlier — putting harvest machinery, hauling and storage logistics under cost pressure through the 2026 season.

American potato growers are bringing in the 2026 crop under the weight of the most expensive diesel in years. Rising diesel prices are set to increase harvesting, handling and transportation costs across the US potato supply chain this season.

The numbers are stark. The US Energy Information Administration (EIA) reported the average US retail diesel price at $6.29 per gallon in September 2026. Weekly data show some easing in early October — the US average on-highway diesel price stood at $6.199 per gallon on 5 October 2026 — but that compares with $3.711 per gallon in the corresponding week a year earlier: an increase of about 67%. The EIA’s October outlook forecasts retail diesel remaining above $6 per gallon during October before gradually declining, while staying elevated relative to historical averages as fuel inventories remain tight. The price surge comes amid global fuel supply disruptions linked to conflicts in the Middle East and Ukraine.

For potato businesses, the exposure runs through four channels, the analysis explains. First, field harvesting: diesel-powered machinery covers digging, collecting, loading and moving the crop, and every hour of operation now costs more — especially for farms running long hours or repeated passes. Second, transport from fields to storage or processing: hauling costs rise with distance, load size and trip count, leaving remote farms most exposed. Third, storage and handling: while diesel does not directly set electricity rates, it affects the cost of moving potatoes and operating some handling equipment. Fourth, deliveries to processors and fresh markets: trucking companies facing higher fuel expenses may seek higher freight rates, and how those increases are divided among growers, processors, retailers and consumers will depend on contracts and each business’s ability to absorb costs.

Crucially, higher production costs do not guarantee higher selling prices. Growers sell into markets shaped by supply, demand, quality, competition and existing contracts; if diesel rises but potato prices do not, margins simply compress. The reported figures are also on-highway retail prices, not the exact price any given farm pays for agricultural fuel — actual costs vary with location, taxes, supplier contracts and fuel type. The analysis draws on the EIA’s Short-Term Energy Outlook for October 2026 and its weekly Gasoline and Diesel Fuel Update, alongside reporting by Reuters, Axios and the American Farm Bureau Federation’s fb.org.

The practical advice for growers is managerial rather than dramatic: review fuel budgets against actual harvesting and hauling expenses, coordinate field operations to cut idle time and repeat trips, compare delivered-fuel offers before bulk purchases, plan loads to avoid empty trips, and track fuel spending per acre, per tonne or per load to spot where increases bite hardest.

What to watch for the rest of 2026: whether the early-October easing in diesel continues, how global supply and inventories evolve, and where freight rates settle as the crop moves into storage. The EIA expects a gradual decline after October — a forecast, not a guarantee.

The latest EIA weekly update put the national average at $6.179 per gallon on 12 October. The American Farm Bureau Federation estimates that farm diesel rose from $3.01 to $5.61 per gallon and that higher fuel costs add about $18.23 per acre to potato harvest costs.
